Aaaahhhhhh I really wanted to make a version of Derek utilizing his original personality so nothing better than using the Anti-Tulpar AU!
Icarus!Derek takes his job as the Icarus's Doctor seriously, he keeps tabs on the mental and physical health of the other crew members, makes notes about their habits and patterns. He is not taken seriously as he is the youngest, thus its usually easy to see him wearing a frown and a raspy voice. He is quite stubborn, and learned the hard way to not be "annoying and bossy" during his psych evals and body check ups. He has marks on his tongue from constantly biting it everytime he wants to talk back at the others.
At the beginning of the haul, since it was his first, he seemed to smile more and joke around, he started to keep his distance after learning the "dynamics" within the group.
He tries his best to hide the fact he is terrified of Captain Grant and, while still needing to man up to tell him (And by extension, Anya and Daisuke) to stop beating the Janitor so often, if they don't want to waste medical equipment for when they actually need it. He is constantly mocked and disregarded but at least they lower the intensity of their "activities"

Relationships with the Icarus crewmembers:
Captain Grant: Terrified of him, he always pays close attention to the Captain's moves, he has a bad feeling about him. And he was right, the first time Grant tried to burn a cigarette on his hand, Derek was lucky enough to use his coat's sleeve to prevent being burnt
Accountant Daisuke: At first they got along, but eventually began to resent him for being a bully, he has to act friendly and tolerate his personal space being invaded, as well bite his own tongue whenever the other makes comments about him "looking way too much like a girl"
Mechanic Anya: She tried to beat him once after he dared to defend the Janitor from her, however she hurt her wrist from wielding that axe so often and required treatment. Derek promised to keep her main tools intact as she allowed him the same treatment
Chef Swansea: He is probably the only person he genuinely hates with a passion, as the old man wears that "sweet grandpa" face while still being an observer, entertained at the abuse that goes around the ship. Yet, Derek is aware the old man is also scared of the Captain.
Janitor Jimmy: He feels sorry for the older man, he has to patch him up so often that they almost spend all the time together, however, in order to prevent the Janitor from getting hurt even more and Derek to protect himself, he has to tell Jimmy to scream as hard as he can while in MedBay, to give the impression the Doctor is a Mad one that tortures whoever falls "his patient". They weren't anything, but there was longing and unspoken feelings.
In my Anti-Tulpar AU, things began to turn awful the moment that Daisuke and Anya discovered that the Janitor's bandages weren't covering any bruises, in fact, his body was almost healed from the last beating he received, which made them immediatly tell their fearsome Captain. It was time to put the Doctor in his place, they not only beated the crap outta Derek, but him, as stubborn he is despite being outnumbered dared to fight back. He managed to stab a scalpel on one of Anya's hands and hit Daisuke wit his Medi-Kit.
He then was restrained by the Captain, who already was bigger and stronger than him.
He didn't only receive a beating but he was humilliated by being forced to strip down and apologize, completely naked, that's when they find out about the Doctor's "identity". Anya leaves, but hoped to hear some good, genuine, real screams this time.
Daisuke is the one who commits the SA, while the Captain just enjoys the view. But then he gets creative, and starts forcing Derek to take pills, one after the other while the Accountant has his fun. When they finished they realized they got it too far, the Doctor was dead. As they couldn't dump his body in space, they shoved him in the ship's incinerator to get rid of the evidence.
The Janitor, after losing the only thing that kept him sane and the beating became even more intense, crashed the ship. He managed to blame Captain Grant for it. By telling the rest of the crew that Grant panicked when he received HR's faxes, demanding to know why the psych evals weren't arriving, nor any update from the Doctor (Which in fact were true, those faxes did arrive but Jimmy was the one around who received them while cleaning the Cockpit).
Now that the Captain was being hated and received the damages of the crash, and the Janitor being the only one who knew how to "care" for him, he slowly began to kill each of the crewmambers by following the notes the late Doctor left.
First he killed Swansea by poisoning the food he was making, as the notes said that the old man always tasted the food first and not in small quantities.
Then he kills Anya, as she has been wounded by the Doctor and was left with only one hand to actually defend herself or even try to beat him up. He kills her by shoving her onto a broken vent in MedBay, her lower half mauled by it. (The vent was broken by Grant and Daisuke during the assault)
Before dying, the Mechanic complains that she didn't deserve this, as she wasn't the one that raped and killed the doctor.
That left Jimmy with the obvious two suspects, he kills Daisuke with the axe, first in his groin, then in his head.
Now that Grant was the only one left, the Janitor has finally lost it, he endured a long long time with his childhood friend's treatment, always Grant, never sharing his toys but would demand Jimmy to share his, until he broke them. Jimmy was only returning the favor, he was BREAKING IT.
He cannibalizes the former Captain, making sure he felt as much pain as possible, the Janitor still talking in a sweet manner about their time together, the past. He then began to inflict the same pain he received, several times. After he was done there was no white bandages left in Grant's body.
The Janitor promised, they were both villains. People will remember that, people will know that. So he puts Grant in the cryopod, where Derek's notes and journal were. There was the evidence the Captain and the crew tried to hide. Before shooting himself, Jimmy expressed regretting sticking so long with his "friend" it was horrible, but hey, one last thank you for the job, he got to know an angel at least and that angel indeed watched over him until the very end.

My friend and I were watching tonight wondering why My Golden Blood chose the age of 21 for the ✨Golden Blood✨ to wear off. Often, these vampirical tropes are oriented around coming-of-age milestones. But, it’s obvi not the age around the onset of puberty, the age of consent in Thailand is 15, and both the legal drinking age and age of majority/adulthood in Thailand is 20. So why 21?
Well, best guess? The most significant experience that comes at the age of 21 in Thailand is the mandatory military drafting lottery for men in Thailand. @absolutebl did a write-up of the military lottery with some helpful additions in the notes, and there’s also a Thai BL Reddit thread going into more details, as well.
Suddenly, the idea of being protected as a child only to be asked to sacrifice yourself for those in power becomes a bit more prescient. And the divide of wealth between the vampires and Tong and Tonkla also becomes more relevant in this military light since attendance to Ror Dor—which allows boys to skip conscription by participating in training during high school—has financial and geographical barriers. What about the lurking presence of military history (like a Trojan horse) in classes or a vampirical recruitment officer, like Nakan, worming his way onto campuses to encourage voluntary conscription, a strategy increasingly emphasized by the Thai military?
Since this is a BL, even though I don’t see clear commentary on this issue in MGB, it’s also significant to note that Amnesty International has a full report from 2020 about the targeted physical and sexual abuse of conscripts, especially gay conscripts in the Thai military.
Less-than-positive commentary on the military in media is one of the bigger no-no’s in Thailand, right up there with criticism of the monarchy, so it’s always interesting for me to catch a Thai work like MGB gesturing beneath the veil of censorship.
As always, you don’t need to read the political symbolism to enjoy the show, especially when it’s really just a wonderfully cheesy twilight homage, but I think learning about politics and history can be fun, too (and by fun, I mean make you sob about Tonkla again).

now that star wars is finally addressing the likelihood of imperial officers committing acts of sexual violence for their own enjoyment and probably as a means of interrogation, i am once again thinking about leia's captivity on the death star. there's conflicting evidence as to how long she was there, but she definitely resisted whatever torture they threw at her to the point that they resorted to blowing up her home planet. yeah they were probably gonna blow up alderaan anyway, but this is confirmation that my worst fears of what she might've endured there are entirely possible. leia my sweet girl i'm so sorry they would hypothetically do that to you 😭

I was sexually harassed and touched by a creepy stranger today and my mom said that I should be proud of how attractive I am now that I've lost weight. I swear I'm going to commit crimes that violate the comics code.

If you've ever read Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes by Rick Riordan, then you'll understand me.
Sa Eon and Hee Joo remind me of Eros and Psyche.
Eros and Sa Eon both live in a marriages that were arranged by themselves for the safety of the women they love.
They try to hide their identity and run away from the women they love in an attempt to protect them.
But these women are so crazy, they will do anything to be with their lovers.

thinking about Thomas and Randall. maybe im crazy but i always interpreted it as a story of CSA. like, R torturing & taking Thomas's name as an allegory for SA....
"He had a hard time speaking ever since the incident with Randall. He had a hard time sleeping, eating, and just about everything else, too."
Two Full Years Later, "Thomas was just as happy to forget Randall forever, though he still couldn't help that spike of panic whenever a man in green scrubs turned a corner. Always, for just an instant, he thought it might be Randall again."
Thomas had nightmares and flashbacks abt him but can't talk to anyone about it. when he gets close to talking abt that trauma, all he can say is "some people could be nicer. like randall." he pretends like nothing happened, but in his head, "he thought back to when randall had taken away his name—it had felt like losing part of his soul." it's hard to tell if teresa even knows, because she cracks a joke about sending R after him, and he laughs???
but he is so terrified of R that among everyone around him, he's the one rushing to get away from R when he's infected and chasing them.
when he runs into R again, as a full blown crank, R pursues him saying "I miss the tasty treats." This passage is so nasty: "'Tasty,' Randall's voice whispered directly into his ear. Thomas screamed, twisting his body, struggling to get out from under the monster pinning him down." And when Thomas bashes his skull in he spends a long while just staring at R's dead body.
it's just a very fascinating aspect of the story, because he just Never talks to anyone about Randall, despite the lifelong trauma it caused. and then he gets to kill his abuser with his own hands, and instead all he thinks is that no one deserves to die that way.

I love reading your thoughts! I think that while some of the things that happened to Lestat are women-coded the way he reacts to them is very specific to men? Unlike book Louis who makes sadness his whole identity haha, he never dwells on his trauma or blame others, he sweeps it all under the carpet and hides behind the jokes. Also, I think that some of the stuff happened to him precisely because he's a man? Like Akasha picking him up 'cause to her he represents "essence of maleness"; his household dynamic with violent father and a mother who grooms him to be "a little man in the house who is not like these other awful men", and a son becoming fixated on her and seeing her as his saviour, desperate for scraps of her affections. I work with suvivors and mother-son emotional incest is very common dynamic unfortunately, and the way Akasha and Gabrielle treat Lestat feels very reminiscent of how female abusers treat their male victims. The way he's afraid of Akasha but still wants to please her, how she taunts his masculinity and how he claims to love her "like a man loves a woman" but absolutely hates himself afterwards and try to kill himself feels very real! A lot of men have the mindset that men can't be abused so what happened to them was totally consensual and wasn't that bad and Lestat does it all the time. And in the last books he has full blown panic attack related to Magnus and obvious ptsd symptoms so you know he never actually got over any of this! But also he's a very pro-active, dynamic character, more a doer than a thinker, which is such a stark contrast to Louis who is more reactive and passive and obsessively overthink everything ( at least book Louis, show!Louis is more impulsie and active), and that makes their dynamic fascinating to me!
Thank you, anon! I loved reading your thoughts too - I hadn't really considered the parallel between Gabrielle and Akasha (it's been a minute since I read QOTD, but I'm getting there!), so it's really interesting to get your insight, particularly working in the field.
I agree though about Anne being pretty clear throughout Lestat's arc that he just never really deals with anything and as a result it's always just simmering there beneath the surface. It's going to be really interesting to see what the show does with that, especially as it's evolved Louis' more navel-gazey tendencies in the books (the gloomy egoist!) into a desire to genuinely live more honestly and completely (although if he'll achieve that remains to be seen). It makes a lot of sense for his character and is a change that I really love, but it is a departure from the books and I can't wait to see what that means for his shifting dynamic with Lestat who just - - yeah. Doesn't really feel any desire to address The Horrors on a genuine emotional level, haha.
Someone tagged something the other day about Lestat's approach to everything being one with drama and whimsy, and it made me laugh, but it's also so true and all sorts of devastating when it comes to the shit that he's been through and has yet to go through.
